Drafting and sending are different actions: keep send, reply and forward approval-gated so a human reads the message before it leaves the mailbox.

What it is

This is one of Claude’s three Google Workspace connectors. Claude can retrieve mailbox context, draft a message in the connected Gmail account, and — with approval — send, reply to or forward it. Anthropic’s help page also documents that on Team and Enterprise plans, owners decide whether members can allow these actions to run without asking each time, so drafting and sending should be treated as separate governance decisions.

What it can do

What it cannot do

Not confirmed means official documentation does not assign this capability to this specific connection. It is not a claim that the capability is impossible.

Every status is defined the same way across the site — see how connector capabilities are defined and evidenced.

How to connect

Setup path Claude Customize/Settings > Connectors

  1. 1. Open connectors

In Claude, open Customize/Settings > Connectors.

  2. 2. Connect Google

    Connect Google Workspace/Gmail.

  3. 3. Request enablement

Team/Enterprise users first request organization enablement.

  4. 4. Decide the approval posture

Keep per-action approval for send, reply and forward unless an owner has deliberately relaxed it.

  5. 5. Ask and approve

Ask a mailbox question and approve connector actions when prompted.

Permissions, privacy, and admin controls

Team and Enterprise Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connector before member authentication. Owners also decide whether send, reply and forward actions may run without asking each time.

  • Anthropic’s current documentation states Claude asks for approval before sending, replying to or forwarding email by default.
  • Connector data retrieved into a chat is retained with that chat; deleting the chat deletes associated retrieved data.
  • Anthropic states it does not train models on Gmail, Drive, or Calendar connector data.

Platform context

  • Claude web connectors are generally available across Claude surfaces, but individual connector requirements differ. Claude inherits the connected user’s permissions from the source service. Team and Enterprise organization owners may need to enable a connector before members authenticate it.

Documented limitations

  • Drafting and sending are different actions: keep send, reply and forward approval-gated so a human reads the message before it leaves the mailbox.
  • Does not read attachment contents.
  • It may only expose information the connected user can access.

Best use cases

  • Mailbox search
  • Thread summaries
  • Drafting replies
  • Sending an approved reply
  • Organizing email

Example prompts

  • Find the most recent contract thread and summarize the unresolved terms.
  • Draft a reply to the last message in that thread, but wait for my approval before sending.
  • Forward the signed order confirmation to our operations alias after I approve it.
  • Label the messages related to the product launch.

Troubleshooting

  • Claude will not complete a Gmail request

Confirm organization enablement, the correct Google account and mailbox authorization. If a send, reply or forward request stops, check whether it is waiting on your approval, and whether the request depends on attachment contents Claude cannot read.

  • Claude says it sent an email but nothing was sent

Check the Gmail Sent folder directly. Anthropic publishes separate guidance on Claude falsely claiming to have sent email; treat the mailbox, not the chat, as the record of what happened.
