ChatGPT · Slack
Does Slack connect to ChatGPT?
Yes. The ChatGPT Slack app can search and answer questions across Slack messages, threads, channels and direct messages. Where available and enabled by a workspace administrator, it can also perform supported Slack actions.
Quick answer
Yes — Slack connects to ChatGPT as a native app, verified against official documentation on 4 Sept 2026. Documentation confirms search, read, create and update access. The ChatGPT Slack app can search and answer questions across Slack messages, threads, channels and direct messages. The main documented limit: a ChatGPT account can connect to only one Slack workspace at a time.

What it is
This record covers Slack connected as an app inside ChatGPT: it brings permitted Slack context into ChatGPT conversations and can search conversations, threads, channels and direct messages the connected user can already access. OpenAI also documents optional actions—including joining a channel, creating a reminder, uploading a file and updating the user’s Slack profile—when those actions are available and enabled by the workspace administrator. That is a different product from the ChatGPT app installed inside Slack, which runs in its own Slack sidebar and supports drafting, search and summaries there.

What it can do
- SearchSupported
Search Slack channels and direct messages. Keyword search is documented across Slack plans; semantic search depends on the Slack plan and AI eligibility.

Availability and requirements
OpenAI documents access for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise/Edu users, subject to workspace, Slack administration and regional requirements. The app is not currently available to Plus and Pro users in the EEA, Great Britain or Switzerland; Business and Enterprise users are not affected by that restriction.
Account requirements
- An eligible ChatGPT account
- A Slack account and workspace
- Permission to access the requested Slack messages and channels
- Workspace approval where required
- Individual OAuth connection
How to connect
Setup path ChatGPT app / Plugin Directory + Slack OAuth
1. Open the Slack app
Open the ChatGPT app or Plugin Directory and select Slack.
2. Request workspace enablement
Ask the ChatGPT workspace administrator to enable Slack if required.
3. Authorize Slack
Complete the Slack OAuth flow and select the appropriate workspace.
4. Get Slack-side approval
Ask the Slack administrator to approve the app or updated scopes if required.
5. Review actions
Review the available Slack actions before using the connection.
Permissions, privacy, and admin controls
Business, Enterprise and Edu workspace administrators can manage the Slack app and its action controls. Enterprise/Edu administrators must enable the app and may apply role-based access. Slack-side administrator approval may also be required for OAuth scopes.
- The app inherits the connected user’s Slack permissions and cannot reach content that user cannot already access.
- Slack administrator approval may be required for the OAuth scopes the app requests.
Platform context
- OpenAI’s Plugin Directory is now the main discovery surface, while apps remain the integrations that connect ChatGPT to external data and actions. App capabilities and availability can vary by app, plan, workspace, role, surface, model, and region. Business workspace admins can manage apps; apps are enabled by default for Business and disabled by default for Enterprise/Edu. Enterprise/Edu can use role-based access controls. ChatGPT permissions do not give an app new provider permissions; they govern when ChatGPT asks before using access already granted. Voice mode does not currently support apps.
Documented limitations
- A ChatGPT account can connect to only one Slack workspace at a time.
- The separate ChatGPT app installed inside Slack does not support deep research, agent mode or model switching, although web search and other enabled ChatGPT apps can work inside it.
- Semantic search requires an eligible Slack Business+ or Enterprise+ plan with the relevant AI features.
- Write actions depend on workspace configuration and approved Slack OAuth scopes.
- Availability varies by ChatGPT plan, workspace settings and region.
- The app cannot retrieve Slack content the connected user cannot already access.
Best use cases
- Finding decisions in Slack conversations
- Summarizing channel activity
- Creating project or meeting briefs from Slack
- Retrieving context from direct messages and threads
- Performing approved Slack actions without leaving ChatGPT
Example prompts
- “Summarize the decisions made in the marketing channel this week.”
- “Catch me up on my unread Slack threads.”
- “Find the discussion about the launch date and list the final action items.”
- “Create a one-page meeting brief from the project channel.”
Troubleshooting
Slack search returns nothing or the app cannot connect
Confirm ChatGPT plan eligibility and region, workspace enablement, the Slack OAuth connection and workspace selection, Slack administrator approval of the requested scopes, and that the connected user can already access the content.
A Slack action is unavailable
Actions depend on availability and workspace administrator configuration. Review the action controls in the ChatGPT workspace settings and the approved Slack scopes.
Is there an official ChatGPT app for Slack?
Yes. OpenAI documents a ChatGPT Slack app, and Slack lists ChatGPT in its own app directory. It is a first-party application installed into a Slack workspace over Slack OAuth.
What is the difference between connecting Slack to ChatGPT and the ChatGPT app in Slack?
Connecting Slack as an app inside ChatGPT lets ChatGPT search and act on permitted Slack content from a ChatGPT conversation. The ChatGPT app in Slack is a separate install that runs in a dedicated Slack sidebar for drafting, search and summaries; web search and other enabled ChatGPT apps can work there, but deep research, agent mode and model switching do not.
Does the ChatGPT Slack app need administrator approval?
It can. Enterprise and Edu ChatGPT workspace administrators must enable the app, Business administrators can manage it, and the Slack workspace may separately require administrator approval of the requested OAuth scopes.
Can the ChatGPT Slack app see private channels and direct messages?
It can only reach Slack content the connected user can already access. OpenAI documents search across channels and direct messages within the connected user’s existing permissions.
How does this compare with Claude in Slack and Gemini with Slack?
Anthropic documents a first-party Claude app for Slack. Google does not publish documentation for a first-party Gemini connector for Slack, so Connector Scout records that pair as unavailable.

Verification history
Last verified 4 Sept 2026 · next review 4 Oct 2026 · Connector Scout editorial research
- 4 Sept 2026Re-verified against OpenAI's current ChatGPT Slack app documentation. Search across messages, threads, channels and direct messages and the conditional actions (joining a channel, creating a reminder, uploading a file, updating the Slack profile) are unchanged, as are the plan and regional caveats. Added an explicit distinction between Slack connected as an app inside ChatGPT and the separate ChatGPT app installed inside Slack.
