How to Connect Microsoft Teams to ChatGPT—and Check Chat Commitments Against Planner

Use your work or school account, check which approvals your organization needs, confirm one Teams thread you know, then compare what people said in chat with what Planner actually assigns.

By Christian Stewart, Founder and EditorPublished 28 Oct 2026Documentation reviewed 28 Oct 2026

Teams chats are full of soft commitments. “I can take that” in a channel is not the same as a Planner task with your name on it, and “let’s aim for Friday” is not a new due date. A week later, nobody is sure who owns what.

Connected ChatGPT can pull the chat and the Planner tasks side by side. The useful habit is to keep what was assigned apart from what was offered, and an overdue date apart from an agreed new one.

This walkthrough uses the Microsoft Teams app in ChatGPT. Product claims were checked against official OpenAI documentation on October 28, 2026. AI assisted the research and writing. The prompts and the fictional example are Connector Scout editorial recommendations, not results from hands-on testing.

Quick answer

The Microsoft Teams app in ChatGPT works with Teams content your connected Microsoft work or school account can already access. Availability depends on your ChatGPT plan, location, workspace settings, Microsoft account and your organization’s Entra policies. Connect it from Plugins or Apps and sign in with your Teams account; if your organization requires admin consent, a Microsoft Entra administrator may need to approve permissions first. Depending on what your organization approves and enables, it may also send messages or change Planner tasks, so decide how actions are approved. (OpenAI’s Teams app guide)

The walkthrough ends with your review and anything you choose to send yourself. Prompts are not substitutes for checking your account, permissions and the sources themselves.

Teams in ChatGPT is not @ChatGPT in Teams

There are two different experiences. Connecting Teams in ChatGPT lets you use your Teams content while you work in ChatGPT, through your own connected account. @ChatGPT inside Teams is a separate assistant your administrator sets up for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, and it runs through an account configured for the assistant. Connecting one does not install or enable the other. This guide covers the first. (OpenAI on Teams vs @ChatGPT; OpenAI’s Teams app guide)

Before you connect: the right account and approvals

Sign in with the Microsoft work or school account you use for Teams. A personal Microsoft account does not give access to content available only to your work account. (OpenAI’s Teams app guide; OpenAI on app accounts)

Who controls what before Teams works in ChatGPT

ChatGPT workspace

Who
Workspace owner or admin
What they decide
Whether the Teams app is available and which actions are allowed

Microsoft Entra

Who
An Entra administrator, if your organization requires admin consent
What they decide
Which Microsoft permissions the requested actions use

Your access

Who
Your Teams membership and Microsoft 365 permissions
What they decide
Which chats, channels, meetings and tasks you can reach

OpenAI notes these roles may be held by different people, and that approving a Microsoft permission does not automatically enable the related action in ChatGPT. Business admins manage app availability across the workspace; Enterprise and Edu admins also review role access. If new permissions are approved later, you may need to reconnect. (OpenAI’s Teams app guide; OpenAI admin controls)

In Enterprise workspaces where the controls are enabled, admins can also limit which teams are reachable and exclude content by sensitivity label. Those controls apply alongside your own Microsoft permissions. (OpenAI’s Teams app guide)

Connect Microsoft Teams to ChatGPT

  1. Open Plugins or Apps in ChatGPT, depending on what your version shows.
  2. Find Microsoft Teams and select the option to connect your account.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account you use for Teams.
  4. Review the requested permissions and complete Microsoft’s authorization.
  5. Return to ChatGPT, then mention Teams with @ or pick it from the + menu in a chat.

What ChatGPT can reach and do in Teams

ChatGPT does not grant access to any team, chat, channel or meeting your Microsoft account cannot already access. Within that, what is available depends on the permissions your organization approved and the actions enabled in your workspace. (OpenAI’s Teams app guide)

Teams capabilities OpenAI lists, each subject to approval and workspace settings

Chats and channels

What OpenAI documents
Search or retrieve messages; list teams, channels and chats

Messages

What OpenAI documents
Send or reply, when that action is enabled

Chats and channels

What OpenAI documents
Create supported chats or channels, when enabled

Planner

What OpenAI documents
Read, create, update or delete supported tasks, when enabled

Meetings

What OpenAI documents
Retrieve information from eligible scheduled Teams meetings

Transcripts

What OpenAI documents
Transcript text only if a transcript exists and your account can access it

Recordings

What OpenAI documents
Recording metadata, not the recording file contents

Two points to keep straight. Without an accessible transcript, ChatGPT cannot retrieve transcript text through that feature, and a recording lookup tells you that a recording exists and its details, not what was said. Transcript and recording features also depend on your plan. Do not assume an action is available just because a Microsoft permission appears in the consent screen; it also has to be enabled in ChatGPT. (OpenAI’s Teams app guide)

Check one Teams thread you already know

Prompt 1: Check one known thread
Use Microsoft Teams. Find the message from [person] in the [channel or chat name] about [topic] from around [date]. Give me the channel or chat name, the author, the date and the exact words of one short sentence. If you find something similar but not this exact message, say so instead of guessing. Do not send, reply to or create anything.

Open the thread in Teams and compare. If it is missing, OpenAI suggests checking the connected account and which organization owns the chat; if you can open it in Teams with that account, start a new ChatGPT conversation and give the specific message or conversation link. Guest access in Teams does not by itself confirm access through ChatGPT. (OpenAI’s Teams app guide)

Compare chat commitments with Planner tasks

Ask for the chat and the tasks separately, then compare. The structure is our recommendation, not a Microsoft or OpenAI feature.

Prompt 2: Gather commitments and tasks separately
Use Microsoft Teams. 1. In [channel or chat name] since [date], list every message where someone offers, accepts or is asked to take on work for [project]. Give the author, date and exact quote. 2. Separately, list my Planner tasks for [plan or project name] with title, assignee, due date and status as recorded. Keep the two lists apart. Say if you could not reach any plan, channel or chat. Do not create, update or send anything.
Prompt 3: Match commitments to tasks
Using only the two lists above, build a table: Commitment in chat (quote, author, date) | Matching Planner task, or “none retrieved” | Assigned in Planner or only proposed in chat | Due date recorded vs any new date mentioned | Missing evidence. Treat a new date as agreed only if a message explicitly confirms it. “None retrieved” means not found in what you could access, not proof that no task exists.

A fictional example

This is an illustration, not a real result. Names, channels and dates are invented.

Fictional comparison: source evidence, interpretation and missing evidence

Planner task “Vendor contract review”: assigned to Dana, due 3 Oct, not started

Reasonable interpretation
Dana is the assigned owner and the task is overdue
Missing evidence
Whether Dana knows it is overdue

#launch channel, 6 Oct, Ravi: “I can take the contract review if Dana’s swamped”

Reasonable interpretation
Ravi offered to help; the task was not reassigned
Missing evidence
Any reply from Dana or the plan owner accepting

#launch channel, 7 Oct, Dana: “Let’s aim for the 14th”

Reasonable interpretation
A new date was proposed
Missing evidence
Whether anyone agreed and whether Planner was updated

No Planner task found for “security questionnaire” mentioned in chat

Reasonable interpretation
No task was retrieved
Missing evidence
Whether it exists in a plan ChatGPT could not reach

The honest handoff is “Contract review: assigned to Dana, overdue since 3 Oct; 14 Oct proposed but not confirmed; Ravi offered to help. Security questionnaire: no task found—confirm whether one exists.” It does not say Ravi owns the review or that the deadline moved.

Draft the handoff in ChatGPT

Prompt 4: Draft a sourced handoff in this chat
Based on the table above, draft a handoff note under 180 words for [recipient]. For each item give the owner as recorded in Planner, any person only proposed in chat, the recorded due date and any proposed new date, each with its source. List open questions at the end. Show the draft here in this chat only. Do not post it in Teams, send any message, or create, update or delete any Planner task.

That closing line is task direction, not a technical lock. Message or Planner actions may be available when the app, Microsoft permissions, connected account and workspace settings allow them. OpenAI says ChatGPT may ask you to confirm before it sends a message or changes a task. Whether approval is required also depends on the permission options offered for your app/account and workspace policy. (OpenAI’s Teams app guide; OpenAI on app permissions)

A draft in this chat is not a Teams message and not a Planner change. If you later post or update anything, read it first and do it where you can see the result.

Troubleshooting

Common problems connecting Microsoft Teams to ChatGPT

Teams does not appear

Next check
Is the app available to your account? In a managed workspace, check role access or approved-domain policy

Admin approval required

Next check
Ask a Microsoft Entra administrator to review the permissions for the actions you need

An action still does not work

Next check
Action enabled in ChatGPT, permission still granted in Entra, right account connected, you can access the resource, reconnected after new permissions

Content from the right organization is missing

Next check
Check which organization owns the chat; open it in Teams, then give ChatGPT the specific link

No transcript or recording details

Next check
Meeting eligible, plan supports it, your account can access the meeting, and a transcript actually exists

Disconnecting and data handling

Disconnect from Settings > Plugins (or Apps) by selecting Microsoft Teams and then Disconnect. That stops future access but does not delete existing conversations, files or memories. (OpenAI on app accounts)

For Business, Enterprise and Edu, OpenAI says information accessed from apps is not used to train models by default. For Free, Plus, Go and Pro, it may be used if “Improve the model for everyone” is on. Treat a chat that contains work Teams messages like the messages themselves. (OpenAI on connected apps)
