ChatGPT vs Claude integrations

ChatGPT and Claude both connect to external tools and support MCP-based extensibility, but they package those capabilities differently. OpenAI distributes workflows primarily through its Plugin Directory, with apps providing the underlying connections to external data and actions. Anthropic offers directory connectors, custom remote MCP connectors and desktop extensions. An MCP server may be adaptable to both platforms, but authentication, interface, approval and distribution requirements can differ. The two platforms overlap across common workplace services, including Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Slack and SharePoint-related content. That overlap does not mean the connections are equivalent. Search, sync, write actions, administrative controls and surface availability must be evaluated for each platform–application relationship.

Where availability depends on a plan, region, workspace or administrator setting, the page states that limitation instead of reducing it to a generic checkmark. What each platform calls and distributes integrations

OpenAI currently calls external connections “apps.” Since July 2026, the Plugin Directory has become the primary discovery surface: a plugin may bundle apps, skills and app templates, while an app remains the underlying connection to external data or actions. Apps built with the Apps SDK expose tools through an MCP server, but this does not prove that every first-party or previously released ChatGPT connection uses an identical implementation. Anthropic calls these connections “connectors.” Claude offers directory connectors for supported cloud services, custom connectors that reach remote MCP servers and desktop extensions for local tools. Both platforms support MCP-based extensibility, but that does not make their built-in connections or distribution systems interchangeable.

Verified connector coverage today

Connector Scout currently has six documentation-verified relationships for ChatGPT and six for Claude. All six application names overlap, but the implementation and capabilities do not always match. Claude reaches SharePoint through its Microsoft 365 connector, for example, while ChatGPT has a dedicated SharePoint app. Capability-level differences are more meaningful than counting names. Productivity and knowledge work

The platforms overlap substantially in application coverage, but not necessarily in capability. Both have documented connections involving Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar and SharePoint-related content. However, an application appearing on both platforms does not establish matching read, sync or write behavior.

Anthropic specifically documents Gmail draft creation without sending, Google Calendar event management and Google Drive file actions. Do not assume that the corresponding ChatGPT apps support the same actions unless their individual records and official sources confirm them. • Confirm both AI-platform and source-application administrator requirements.

Developer tooling

GitHub is documentation verified on both platforms, but the integrations should not be treated as identical. Claude’s documented GitHub integration adds selected repository files and folders to chats or Projects and can be refreshed manually; it retrieves file names and contents rather than commit history, pull requests or other repository metadata. For internal developer systems, both platforms support MCP-based extension paths, but setup, authentication, hosting, review and workspace eligibility differ. Communication tools

Slack is now documentation verified on both platforms. ChatGPT’s Slack app can search messages, threads, channels and direct messages and may perform approved actions such as creating reminders or uploading files. Claude’s Slack connector searches channels, direct messages and shared files; Anthropic also offers a separate Claude experience inside Slack. The better choice depends on the exact workflow. Compare search coverage, supported actions, Slack-plan requirements, AI-platform eligibility, administrator approval and conversation-retention behavior. Do not treat the presence of “Slack” in both directories as proof of feature parity.

How to choose between them

1. List the systems the assistant genuinely needs to access.
2. Confirm each platform–application relationship separately.
3. Compare search, read, sync and write capabilities rather than application names.
4. Confirm individual authentication, source-system approval and AI-workspace controls.
5. Evaluate surface restrictions, regional restrictions and plan requirements.
6. Treat a custom MCP connection as software that requires hosting, authentication, maintenance and security review.
7. Recheck official documentation immediately before rollout.
