Retrieval and actions are not the same thing, and a documented action is rarely unrestricted. Actions are frequently scoped to specific object types, delegated or shared resources, admin-enabled modes, or preview programs, and OAuth scopes granted at setup are usually broader than the actions an end user can actually trigger. Connector Scout records the documented end-user actions, so a cell showing actions still needs its record read before you design a workflow around it.

Why product surface decides everything

Compatibility is a property of a product surface, not of a brand. ChatGPT connectors behave differently in chat, deep research and agent mode, and several apps are reached through a parent connected app rather than their own connector. Claude splits capability across native connectors, remote MCP connectors and desktop extensions. Most importantly, Gemini Enterprise on Google Cloud is a separate administrator-configured product from the consumer and Google Workspace Gemini experience: an enterprise data-store connector is not something an individual user can switch on in the Gemini app. Read the surface line inside a cell before assuming your own account has the capability.

How to choose a platform

Pick the assistant that reaches the systems your work actually depends on, then check whether it can do more than read them. Breadth is easy to market; documented write actions, admin controls and regional availability are what decide whether a workflow survives contact with a real account.

  • Start from your two or three critical systems — Score platforms only on the apps that carry your work. A platform with a long connector list is not better if the app your team lives in is retrieval only or unavailable there.
  • Separate retrieval from actions deliberately — Retrieval-only coverage is genuinely useful and much lower risk. Ask for write actions only where a repeated, checkable task justifies the governance work.
  • Check the surface, plan and region before you commit — Enterprise-only connectors, preview programs, allowlists and region restrictions decide availability more often than the connector list does. A Gemini Enterprise connector cannot be enabled from the ordinary Gemini app.
  • Confirm who approves the connection — Most business-critical connectors require an administrator, and several require identity configuration on the source platform. Sequence that work before promising a rollout date.
  • Have a path for apps with no native connector — When a system is not in the matrix, the realistic route is an official API, an MCP server or an automation bridge — not a connector that does not exist.
